Rocks of Balance

Session 7

WORKLIFE BALANCE

  • To explore how residency affects personal relationships.

  • To reflect on how the struggle to maintain balance can affect doctoring.

  • To brainstorm how residents can cope with the conflicts between work and personal life.

POINTS FOR DISCUSSION

  • Think about and silently reflect on this question: How are you feeling at this moment in your residency?

  • When ready – sketch a picture that represents what work-life "balance" looks like for you - either ideally or right now

  • If comfortable, share or describe your picture

  • Discuss as group: What did you notice during this exercise? What themes come up in people's pictures?

  • Ask the interns to ways they feel they find balance in their lives and situations that challenge that balance

  • Explore with residents:  is there one strategy for finding balance that you can commit to working on between now and next session?

    • Some ideas might include:

      • schedule "me time"

      • make self care a priority

      • nurture relationships that you are important to you)
